The benefits of eco driving
By becoming a smarter driver you can:
| FIRSTLY | |
| If you don’t need it, don’t use it - | consider alternatives: ride a bike, walk, take public transport or car share |
| Combine your journeys - | take one long trip instead of lots of little ones |
| Don’t hang around – | plan your trip to avoid congestion, road works or getting lost |
| Leave promptly - | don't start the engine until you're ready to go |
| Scrape that ice - | rather than leave the car idling for a long period to warm up |
| Drive off from Cold - | Warming up the engine just wastes fuel and causes engine wear |
|
|
|
| Change gear - | get into second and fourth fast |
| Step off the accelerator - | when slowing down or driving downhill |
| Check your revs - | change up before 2,500rpm (petrol) or 2,000rpm (diesel) |
| Easy does it - | accelerate gently and read the road ahead to avoid unnecessary braking |
| Switch it off - | turn the engine off if you're going to be stationary for more than a minute or two |
| Look ahead - | anticipate the road ahead and don't stop if you can help it |
| Watch that speed - | driving within the speed limit reduces fuel consumption |
ALL THOSE EXTRAS |
|
| Shut it - | close your windows when you don’t need them |
| Don’t be a drag - | reduce your drag and ditch the roof-rack/luggage boxes/bike carrier |
| Lose weight - | clean junk out of the boot |
| Switch it off - | electrical load increases fuel consumption, so turn off your heated rear windscreen, demister blowers and headlights when you don't need them |
MAINTAIN YOUR VEHICLE |
|
|
Do regular car maintenance checks |
