‘Everyone has had a great time. Everybody tried to take part and was

supported by staff from Skern Lodge very well. Because of the high
needs of the group this took the pressure off of the staff from PCC’
Plymouth City Council – Youth Service 2011

‘It was a really good weekend, the staff were lovely and welcoming.
We found the activities challenging but accessible and fun and liked
the variety of options – there was a great, sense on achievement on
completion. We feel accomplished, have improved self-esteem, we’ve
bonded and become a team’
Freedom Youth 2011

THE 5 STEPS

These steps will be followed by each tutor and adjusted according to the requirements of the group on a day by day basis. This decision is made mutually between the Course Director and the accompanying staff.

Step 1

Meeting the people you are working with.

Setting aims of the week.

Step 2

Learn new skills on activities.

Build trust and support between group members through activities.

Step 3

Use challenge as a means of increasing confidence in self and others by pushing boundaries.

Mid course review highlights achievements so far and re-focuses the remainder of the week.

Step 4

A chance to nurture skills gained or highlighted during the week with a supervised expedition in a challenging environment – taking decisions and responsibility for themselves and others.

Step 5

The Big Step Home

Transferring learning gained at Skern Lodge and applied to each individual's environment.

Feedback from peers and tutors on individual achievements and development during the week.

Look at support and opportunities for the future

‘Rob had a very good manner in dealing with a challenging
group of girls. He was patient and understanding, gave clear
instruction and time for the group to adjust to new challenges’
YIP Bridgwater 2011
