Geography Field Studies in a nutshell
Skern Lodge Field Studies Centre provides tailor made geography and environmental fieldwork courses in North Devon. Residential courses can be designed in conjunction with visiting staff to ensure all of your educational needs from Key Stage 2 through to AS/A2 Level are met.
The field studies centre is situated in an‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' and is inside the internationally recognised UNESCO Biosphere of Braunton Burrows. Our fieldwork sites are ideally situated throughout this area to maximise these unrivalled resources. Our programmes can include days investigating the process and landforms on the Heritage Coast of Hartland, the diversity of sand dune ecosystems at Braunton Burrows to studying fluvial processes on Exmoor National park. With such unrivalled field sites we can build a course to suit.
The centre offers residential geography fieldwork courses with full tuition at all levels from Key Stage to A Level, where experienced and enthusiastic staff can deliver your programme.

Birds of Prey Display
Watch top Falconer Jonathan Marshall combine unique falconery skills with superb showmanship in a spectacular Birds of Prey display. You will see some of the best flying birds on the planet from skilful Falcon’s to majestic Golden Eagles. You may even get to have a go yourself.

Owl Handling
A fantastic opportunity to learn all about Owl’s from local expert Tali. A great session in which pupils can learn fascinating fact’s about Owl’s, how they live and hunt, as well as how to handle some of Tali’s own beautiful birds.

Cob Building
Try your hand at this traditional building method. Used extensively in Devon, this method of building incorporates, water, soil, hay or straw. Warning! It will be a hand’s on, mucky, creative and intensely fun experience. Once you have the mix right, you can build whatever you want!

Appledore Trail
Discover the historic fishing village of Appledore. This trail will guide you around the village, visiting all the most interesting spots, from old fisherman’s cottages, to lifeboat station’s, and boatyards. Pupils can be provided with worksheets to fill in as they go. There may also be opportunity to sample the renowned local ice creams!
